CASTRIES, St Lucia: The Biodiversity Unit, National Focal Point for the Biosafety Clearing House of the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and Forestry, under the Biosafety Clearing House Project funded by United Nations Environment Program - Global Environment Facility (UNEP-GEF), will be continuing its series of training workshops targeted at various stakeholders.
The upcoming one day session to be held on March 24, 2009, will train farmers from the north of the island in accessing information on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) that are living and traded from the Biosafety Clearing House.
This clearing house is a web based portal of information where countries that are party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety are mandated to share information on pertinent biosafety issues. The training will be carried out by local instructors who have been trained from previous workshops by UNEP-GEF Regional Advisors. The training will be held in the National Information and Communications Technology Centre in down town Castries.
GMOs that are traded are used for various reasons including food, feed or for processing and the farmers should benefit greatly by the training.
