Region should partner with Canada for growth

CANADA is innovative in a number of areas, including science and technology, and "if we want to improve, we need to partner with them", advises director general of the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (CRNM), Henry Gill.

"We can't stay in a cocoon and improve. The best way of doing it is with partnering with industrialised countries which are advanced in these areas and are willing to partner with us," he said.

Gill, who was a featured speaker at the opening of the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce's (CAIC) Caricom-Canada Business Forum entitled 'new direction for bilateral trade and investment linkages' at the Hilton ballroom, Port of Spain on Monday, told the Express that the relationship the region had with Canada and the political backing given by Caricom states would provide a firm basis for any future partnership.

The forum, which sought to promote trade and investment between the Caribbean region and Canada, outlined several areas of interest such as energy, building products and services, processed food and beverages and environmental services for the proposed Caricom-Canada bilateral trade agreement.

Gill said the current Carib-Can agreement does not offer security to goods entering Canada and many of the products still paid duty.

"The Carib-Can agreement expires at the end of 2011 and we expect that our market access will be more secure with the new one," he said.

Aside from product importation and exportation, Gill said he wanted the new agreement to create avenues for the Caribbean service industries and individuals to partner with Canada and obtain benefits.

"This is important at this point in time when you have the world in international growing recession, a recession that has now started and by many predictions would be going on for years to come," he said.
