BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: A government minister has issued a challenge to the banking sector in Barbados to introduce a merchant account that would facilitate an internet-based payment system for small businesses.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, George Hutson, made this appeal last Friday while addressing a cocktail reception hosted by Dynamic Colour Imaging Incorporated to reintroduce their range of products and services to the public.Hutson advised small entrepreneurs to utilise the technology to boost the productivity of their businesses and to “think outside the box,” by implementing their own creative niche marketing strategies in order to survive during the current global economic crisis.

“I am of the view that greater attention must be given to the effective use of ICTs particularly among smaller companies for the purposes of business growth and entrepreneurial development.

“Let me assure you that Government fully understands the importance of having an ICTs regime which can deliver the type of innovative policies that will have a positive impact on the small and micro business sectors,” he said.

The Minister encouraged the artisans to take full advantage of the opportunites under the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), signed between CARIFORUM and Europe on October 15, 2008.

Hutson said it was a reasonable tool for enhancing economic relations. He advised small businesses to exploit market opportunites that would be created under the agreement.
